~Big Playoff~
In a small eastern town, there was quite a contingent of
Polish and Italian people. Year after year they both took the brunt of
one joke after another. They were getting tired of it and in an attempt
to stop it, at least for one group, they decided to play a football game and
the loser would take the brunt of all of the jokes from then on. They met in
the high school football field on Saturday afternoon and began playing the
game. They were pretty evenly matched, and deep in the fourth quarter
with just two minutes left, the score was still nothing to nothing. The
Poles had the ball on the Italians twenty yard line and it was second down and
three yards to go. Just as they were to hike the ball, a train went by
and blew its whistle. The Italians thought the game was over and they went home.
Three plays later the Poles scored.
